reach. The percentage is the probability of surviving from the first age to the second,\n       based on the Social Security Administration's period life table.<\/p>\n\n    <h2>You have already outlived the average<\/h2>\n    <p>Published male life expectancy at birth is pulled down by mortality at every earlier age. A\n       man who has reached 65 has already passed through those risks, and his remaining life\n       expectancy is longer than the at-birth figure implies. This table works from age 65 forward\n       for that reason &mdash; it reflects the odds for someone who is already there.<\/p>\n\n    <h2>The 50% mark<\/h2>\n    <p>Wherever a row crosses 50%, that age is the median for someone at that starting age. Half\n       the men who start at that age will outlive it and half will not. It is the midpoint of a\n       wide range, not a forecast for any individual.<\/p>\n    <p>For a man of 65, the median is 83. But roughly a quarter of men aged 65 today will reach\n       90, and a meaningful number will go well beyond.<\/p>\n\n    <h2>Why this matters for planning<\/h2>\n    <p>The common error is treating the median as a planning horizon. It is the point at which\n       half of men are still living &mdash; which means planning to it leaves a coin-flip chance\n       of outliving the plan. For retirement income, insurance, or estate decisions, it usually\n       makes more sense to plan toward a lower probability: the age where the odds fall to 25%, or\n       even 10%.<\/p>\n\n    <h2>A few other things to keep in mind<\/h2>\n    <ul>\n      <li>This is a period table.
