Male Life Expectancy Table

Probability of Living to a Certain Age — Male

Retirement planning depends less on average life expectancy than on the odds of living well beyond it. This table shows the probability that a man of a given age reaches each later age.

Find the row for the current age, then read across to the column for the age in question. The gold-outlined cell in each row marks the median — where the odds pass 50%. On smaller screens, scroll the table sideways to reach later ages.

How to read this table

Find the row for your current age, then read across to the column for the age you want to reach. The percentage is the probability of surviving from the first age to the second, based on the Social Security Administration's period life table.

You have already outlived the average

Published male life expectancy at birth is pulled down by mortality at every earlier age. A man who has reached 65 has already passed through those risks, and his remaining life expectancy is longer than the at-birth figure implies. This table works from age 65 forward for that reason — it reflects the odds for someone who is already there.

The 50% mark

Wherever a row crosses 50%, that age is the median for someone at that starting age. Half the men who start at that age will outlive it and half will not. It is the midpoint of a wide range, not a forecast for any individual.

For a man of 65, the median is 83. But roughly a quarter of men aged 65 today will reach 90, and a meaningful number will go well beyond.

Why this matters for planning

The common error is treating the median as a planning horizon. It is the point at which half of men are still living — which means planning to it leaves a coin-flip chance of outliving the plan. For retirement income, insurance, or estate decisions, it usually makes more sense to plan toward a lower probability: the age where the odds fall to 25%, or even 10%.

A few other things to keep in mind

  • This is a period table. It applies a single calendar year's mortality rates across all future years rather than projecting continued improvements in life expectancy, so actual survival odds may prove somewhat better than shown.
  • The figures reflect the general U.S. male population and do not account for health status, family history, lifestyle, or socioeconomic conditions, all of which can meaningfully shift an individual's odds.
  • If you are married, the individual figure is usually not your planning horizon. See the joint survival table.
